PARK SEO BO

Park Seo-Bo is widely considered as being the father of the ¡®Dansaekhwa¡¯ movement. Born in 1931, Park graduated from Hongik University in 1954. He began his career influenced by Art Informel, shown through his use of aggressive brushstrokes, dark hues and amorphous forms during the early 1960s. By the mid-1960s, Park encountered a turning point and returned to oriental philosophy, pursuing an introspective methodology that had its origins in Taoism, Buddhist philosophy and traditional Korean calligraphy. Park is best known for using repeated pencil lines incised into a still-wet monochromatic painted surface on hanji mulberry paper.
