New Vision: Korean Female Abstraction brings together six significant Korean women artists whose practices expand the language of contemporary abstraction through material innovation, gestural expression, and poetic explorations of nature, memory, and perception. Working across ink, charcoal, oil, handmade paper, and richly layered surfaces, Jung Jong Mee, Lee Hyun Joung, Kang EemYun, Cha Won Hee (Whee), Roh Gippuem, and Estelle Tcha each transform abstraction into deeply tactile, immersive, and sensory experiences. While their visual languages are distinct, they share a commitment to material sensitivity and an intuitive dialogue between the physical world and inner experience, revealing the remarkable breadth and vitality of contemporary Korean abstraction.

Rather than treating abstraction as purely formal, these artists approach the surface as a living field shaped by rhythm, memory, movement, and time. Through repetition, layering, and physical interaction with materials, their works reveal an intimate dialogue between body, medium, and environment.

Jung Jong Mee (b. 1957, Korea)

Jung Jong Mee (b. 1957, Korea) is known for lyrical abstractions rooted in Korean material traditions and philosophies of nature. Using traditional linen and richly layered pigments, her paintings evoke atmospheric landscapes suspended between earth, memory, and meditation.

Lee Hyun Joung (b. 1972, Korea) Lives and works in Paris

Lee Hyun Joung (b. 1972, Korea) creates rhythmic compositions using ink on handmade Korean mulberry paper. Through the repetition of flowing lines, her works dissolve conventional landscapes into wave-like formations and meditative spatial experiences that recall water, wind, and geological rhythms.

Kang EemYun (b. 1981, Korea) Lives and works in Milan

Whee (b. 1984, Korea) Lives and works in Manila and Seoul

Whee (b. 1984, Korea) explores abstraction through subtle accumulations of texture, collage, sculpture, and painting. Her layered surfaces suggest fragments of memory, organic growth, and shifting emotional states, balancing fragility with material presence.

Roh Gippeum (b. 1991, Korea)

Roh Gippeum (b.1991, Korea) experiments with the translation of three-dimensional form into painterly space. Drawing inspiration from movements in 20th-century sculpture and phenomenological philosophy, she collapses the dichotomy between object and image. Her sculptural works arise from the visual grammar of her paintings: the volumetric echoes of biomorphic forms, the sinuous contours of shadows, the interplay of light and mass.

Estelle Tcha (b. 1993, Korea)
